Our model, Mike, decided to put on a tie clip so that the photos turned out perfectly.

Needless to say, we immediately told him to take it off. We don’t mean to sound harsh, but the reality is that these things are out of date. Some will tell you that they add a bit of class, but the truth is that they don’t.

Before we continue, though, we’ll give you a rundown of what types of tie accessories are available and which ones are acceptable and which ones are not.

Tie Bars and Tie Clips

Tie bars and tie clips are very similar. Tie bars are essentially a slide-in-bar that you can use to hold your tie onto your shirt. You basically slide one side of this bar onto the front of the tie and the other side under your shirt. Tie clips are basically the same thing except that instead of sliding it on, you clip it on… no surprise there! :)

Tie Tacks

Tie tacks are a bit more fashionable than tie clips and tie bars, but we still don’t recommend that you use them since they will likely damage your tie. Tie tacks are like cufflinks except they fasten your tie to your shirt.

Tie Straps

Finally, the only tie accessory that we do recommend is a tie strap. Good tie straps are not visible and they do the job of keeping your tie in place (if you use them properly). At the end of the day, though, they aren’t very necessary.
